A chemical used in dry cleaning, tetrachloroethylene (also called perchloroethylene or PCE), is associated with liver damage and fibrosis, as described on Medical News Today. Industrial and consumer products containing PCE include adhesives and glues, brake cleaners, metal degreasers, paint removers, spot removers and water repellents, as well as dry cleaning fluids.

    The researchers analyzed information from the NHANES database. This means the data are observational, not collected after deliberately exposing people or animals to this chemical to see what the effect on their liver would be. Observational studies by their nature cannot prove causation.

    However, this observational study is a bit more solid than those using data from questionnaires. PCE exposure was based on blood levels. Higher blood levels of PCE correlated with higher amounts of liver fibrosis.

    It only makes sense to limit exposure and use appropriate protection with products that may contain toxic chemicals.

    For many years, I have avoided purchasing clothing that required dry cleaning, and going to establishments offering nontoxic cleaning when I have to get something professionally cleaned. I can tell when I walk into the store whether these companies are in fact minimizing the use of chemicals, because the odor of dry-cleaning fluid gives me a headache. My sensitivities can be a nuisance, but on the whole, I think they protect me.
