Some plastics, such as those in electronics, are deliberately treated with fire retardants. When those plastics are recycled, the toxic compounds in the fire retardants can wind up in other items. If black plastic household products are in contact with the skin for long periods, or in touch with heat or moisture, the chemicals can leach
out.
Problematic black plastic items include children’s toys, cooking utensils, hair accessories, and food containers such as sushi trays.
