Earlier this year, I sent an email about food additives and their negative effect on the gut microbiome, specifically discussing the
emulsifier carboxymethylcellulose.
A recent article in the Price-Pottenger Journal alerted me to similar findings about carrageenan, which is extracted from
seaweed and used as a thickener in prepared foods, including some with an organic label. I knew that some people experience intestinal distress when they eat it. An article in the journal Nutrients discusses carrageenan's effect on gut bacteria and
its role in inflammatory bowel disease and allergic reactions.

For more about carrageenan and how to avoid it, see the website of The Cornucopia Institute. Best of all, make your own food from simple ingredients.
