Old Research is Not Necessarily Outdated
Since the arrival of the Internet, it has become a lot easier to find medical articles. This is especially true for older journals, thanks to Google Books
and to the efforts of many of the major journals to scan and make available their archives. Articles that once could only be read by traveling to a major medical library and accessing the archives can now be read by a few clicks of a mouse.
However, some practitioners discount the clinical observations of previous generations, and assume that if a particular treatment has gone out of style, it must have been properly tested and found to be worthless. I was reminded of this when I read a recent article by Alan Gaby, M.D., a well-known expert in nutritional medicine, who says he frequently gets criticized when he refers to older literature.
